Bet with a bookmaker that is actually licensed here.
We read each bookmaker's licence off the regulator's own record, then price its welcome offer against what you actually plan to deposit. The biggest headline is rarely the biggest bonus.

Licensed sportsbooks, best value first
The top 6 of 34, numbered as they are numbered in the full table below. Ordered on licence evidence, regulator coverage, product, and what each welcome offer is actually worth on a R500 first deposit rather than its headline ceiling. That is why a R20 000 offer sits above a R30 000 one. Since 4 August 2026 the order also counts which bookmaker actually paid most, measured across 62.0 million individual prices in 1 514 board sweeps. Commission changes nothing about the order.

On a R500 deposit, the best bonus here is ZAR Bets at R1,000.
Bonus value only. It ignores wagering requirements, minimum odds and expiry, which decide whether a bonus is actually worth taking. Always read the operator's terms. 18+ only. Figures come from each operator's own promotions page, last checked 4 August 2026.

Methodology
How the ranking works
Every sportsbook is scored out of 100, and the formula is public. It is generated from the weights the code actually uses, so this list cannot drift away from the order above it:
- Licence evidence, 40 points. A current match against a regulator's own register scores full marks. Partial evidence scores less. No match scores nothing here, and nothing is published about it: nine provincial authorities issue these licences and several publish no reachable register, so a bookmaker we cannot match is a gap in our records and not a finding about the bookmaker.
- Regulator coverage, 10 points. Scored on how many provincial regulators hold a record for the operator.
- Offer value, 15 points. Scored on what the bonus is worth on a R500 first deposit, not on the headline ceiling. An "up to R5,000" offer is worth R500 to someone depositing R500.
- Product, 15 points. Payments, usability and responsible gambling controls.
- Price actually paid, 20 points. We read every bookmaker's odds every four minutes and record who paid most on each market. This is scored on the share of comparable prices where a bookmaker was best or tied, measured over 62.0 million comparable prices in 1 514 board sweeps since 4 August 2026. It is the only part of this ranking that measures what a bookmaker does rather than what it is, and no other comparison site in South Africa publishes it.
Commercial relationships are worth zero points. Some sportsbooks here pay us a commission and some pay us nothing, and you cannot tell which from the order.
What we do not claim
We have not opened accounts, placed bets or tested withdrawals at these bookmakers, and we do not pretend otherwise. Where a payout speed or a bonus term is not published, this site says so rather than filling the gap.
19 of the 34 bookmakers on this page publish no welcome offer we could verify, either because they run none or because they block automated checks. We left those blank instead of quoting a number we have not seen, which is why the offer column looks emptier here than on sites that fill it in.
The part nobody else publishes
Licence numbers, entity names and the date we checked
Most comparison sites tell you a bookmaker is "licensed and safe" and leave it there. Every review on this site names the legal entity that holds the licence, the provincial board that issued it, the licence number and the date we last looked. Betway alone runs through two separate entities; Hollywoodbets holds five provincial licences.
You can check any of it yourself against the regulator's record, which is the point.
If you came looking for licensed sportsbooks in South Africa, this is that list. There is no separate sportsbook licence in this country: the provinces license bookmakers, and bookmaker is the word printed on every document linked from this register.

Bookmaker comparisons
Hollywoodbets vs Betway
Start with Hollywoodbets if local brand familiarity matters most. Start with Betway if a cleaner international-style interface and SuperPartners evidence matter more. Both now have official licence evidence captured, but payment and offer terms still need live checks before any funded account decision.
CompareBetway vs Sunbet
Both carry current official licence evidence. Betway is the stronger starting point on product and offer rather than on licensing. Sunbet remains useful for local entertainment-brand comparison intent, but current licence proof is still pending because the accessible WCGRB certificate was expired.
Compare10bet vs Hollywoodbets
Hollywoodbets is the safer first review for mainstream SA readers. 10bet is a useful challenger page because it exposes an official MER certificate and public affiliate terms support clean commercial disclosure.
Compare10bet vs ZAR Bets
Both 10bet and ZAR Bets hold current provincial licence evidence. 10bet leads on broader brand history and an MER bookmaker licence with footer validation code; ZAR Bets brings a recently issued WCGRB licence to Apollo Gaming and the highest match percentage on this site. Compare the offers on your own deposit amount before choosing.
Compare10bet vs Playabets
10bet and Playabets are both licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. 10bet leads on brand recognition and a 2-step welcome; Playabets publishes its licence as a downloadable PDF in the operator footer, the only bookmaker here that does. We compare the sportsbook offers only; where an operator promotes other product lines, read its own terms and our product-scope note before relying on them.
Compare10bet vs TopBet
10bet and TopBet are both licensed South African bookmakers. 10bet sits under an MER bookmaker licence with a long brand history; TopBet sits under a WCGRB licence with an Itu Khune brand endorsement. We compare their sportsbook evidence only, and neither is recommended for products outside the sportsbook scope we verify.
