Why bookmakers love accumulators

A bookmaker's margin on a single two-way market is small. We measured a median of 7.97% across 2,717 South African markets on 14 September 2026, which costs a punter about 7.4% of stake over the long run. That is a thin edge, and on singles alone a sharp punter can fight it.

Accumulators change the arithmetic completely, because the margin applies to every leg and the legs multiply. Four legs turns 7.4% into about 26%. Eight legs turns it into about 46%. Twelve legs takes more than half of every rand staked before a single ball is kicked.

None of that means an accumulator cannot win. Plenty do, which is exactly why they stay popular. It means the price you are offered is further from fair value on a long slip than on a short one, and that the gap widens faster than almost anyone expects.

Where the margin figure comes from

We run a live odds board that records what every listed South African bookmaker is offering. For this tool we take every two-way match market where a bookmaker priced both sides, add up the implied chances, and the amount by which they exceed 100% is that bookmaker's margin on that market. The figure quoted is the median across 2,717 such markets.

Books that priced only one side are excluded. A one-sided quote sums to roughly half and would post a spectacular negative margin, which would rank whichever bookmaker had the patchiest coverage as the most generous in the country.

This is a two-way match market figure and it does not transfer to racing. Margins on a full race field are far wider, and we publish those separately on what each bookmaker charges, measured the same way over race fields rather than match markets.

How to give away less of it

Shorter slips concede less, because there are fewer margins to compound. Shopping the price matters more on an accumulator than on a single, for the same reason: an improvement on each leg multiplies too. Our live odds comparison shows who is paying most on each fixture right now, and our bookmaker margin table shows which books charge least before you pick where to put a slip on.

This tool estimates. It applies one margin to every leg, so it prices a typical slip rather than reading your specific one, and it cannot know the true chance of any result.
